What is the difference between a crocodile and an alligator?

Crocodiles are very large reptiles and grow larger than alligators on average. Alligators can grow to 3 to 4.5 meters, weighing an average of 230kg. Crocodiles on the other hand can grow up to 5.5 meters in length, reaching almost 1 ton in weight.

Where does the word alligator come from?

It may come as a surprise to many, but the word "alligator" comes from the Spanish term "el lagarto", meaning "the lizard". It was likely a term the Spanish explorers and settlers used when they were in Florida.

What are the characteristics of an alligator?

All have large heads, long, sharp, pointed bills, short legs, and stubby tails. They nearly all live near fresh water streams, rivers or ponds. As well as fish, they also eat insects, crustaceans, small reptiles and amphibians. They mostly nest in cavities and tunnels.
